Body Composition

The Body Composition exam at Ft. Jesse Imaging uses Dexa (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) technology to produce comprehensive measurements of the body, including the precise locations of bone, fat and muscle mass. This information can help you and your healthcare provider assess the state of your health and work together to develop plans to achieve your health care goals. Having details about your body composition help you become healthier and even excel at your weight-loss and activity goals.

What is a Body Composition exam?

  • Quick 10-15 second scan on the Dexa machine
  • Painless and non-invasive
  • High-definition images are produced along with a detailed report with color image mapping
  • Offered for a flat rate of $50 (not covered by insurance).

Who might benefit from a Body Composition exam?

  • Patients seeking information for weight-loss goals
  • Athletes with targeted training programs
  • Anyone seeking to improve health or monitor fitness and dietary changes
  • Patients with increased risk for visceral fat around organs

What information is provided in the report?

The report provides visual images of the body that show the precise location of bone, lean mass and fat mass. The color-coded system makes it easy for athletes and patients to see exactly where they have fat and muscle on their bodies. Detailed measurements of the torso, hips, abdomen and both arms and legs accompany the image to give a complete picture of body composition.

Studies repeated over time can measure changes as small as 1% muscle and 2% fat showing progress toward fitness goals. The frequency of scans depends on your circumstances, goals and program. Work with your referring provider to determine the best scan frequency for you.

What you should know

Answers to frequently asked questions.

A valid order from a referring healthcare provider is required for this exam. Discuss your goals and how this exam will assist you with your provider.

The Dexa machine does use radiation to produce the high-definition images. The radiation dose exposure during one Body Composition scan is equivalent to one day of background radiation and much less than a CT scan or standard x-ray. The dose is less than the radiation dose received during one cross-country flight. Discuss your radiation dose concerns with your healthcare provider.
